Understanding Varicose Veins

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Anne Wolski A vein is a blood vessel that carries blood throughout the body. Normally, these veins do their job like a well oiled pump but sometimes these veins break down, causing the flow of blood to become abnormal. I am sure most of us have, or know someone who has the enlarged, twisted, superficial veins in their lower legs and ankles known as varicose veins. Varicose veins can occur in any part of the body but are more common in the lower extremities. These veins can be due to genetic default but this is not the only cause. Other contributing factors can be prolonged standing or pregnancy. For many women, the first signs of varicose veins appear during pregnancy. Obesity is also a contributing factor. The added pressure of supporting excess weight is almost certain to result in chronic venous breakdown. The signs and symptoms of varicose veins not only includes the unsightly rope-like veins but also a constant dull ache, cramps, swelling and fatigue after standing. There may also be a brownish discolouration of the skin which is known as stasis pigmentation. This is caused by a breakdown of blood cells leading to a leakage in the affected area and is common in people who have suffered from this condition for a lengthy period of time. Usually diagnosis is simply a case of visual observation but sometimes a procedure called phlebography is used. This is a painless procedure in which a solution called a radio-opaque contrast medium is introduced into the bloodstream. Imaging of the veins is then carried out to detect the abnormalities in the blood flow and venous pressure. Another diagnostic procedure available is the use of ultrasound to examine the blood flow in the major arteries and veins in the arms and legs. This procedure is known as Dopplers ultrasonography. Ultrasound is high frequency sound waves that echo off the body. It is performed by applying a water soluble gel to the body and then passing a hand held device known as a transducer over the area. Treatment of varicose veins an be as simple as wearing elasticised compression stockings, controlling your weight, undertaking a moderate exercise program, avoiding prolonged periods of standing, and elevating the legs whenever possible. Another method of treatment is called compression sclerotherapy. In this procedure, points of abnormal flow from deep to superficial veins are located and permanently obliterated by the injection of a substance called a sclerosant. Application of continuous pressure then restores the pumping capacity of the vein. In severe cases, a surgical procedure called stripping and ligation may be considered necessary. During this surgery, one or more incisions are made over the varicose veins, and the vein is tied off (ligated). If several valves in the vein and the vein itself are heavily damaged, the vein (or the diseased part of the vein) is usually removed (stripped). An incision is made below the varicose vein, a flexible instrument is threaded up the vein to the first incision, and the vein is grasped and removed. If you have varicose veins, it is necessary to seek medical advice. Your health practitioner will advise you of treatment options and will assist you in the care of your condition. Los Angeles Private Investigators

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Robert Darby Like in many other parts in the US, Los Angeles private investigators are registered by the state authority that issues valid licenses for individual private eyes as well as for PI agencies. Once registered they will appear in the state database, and most probably will be listed in online directories. The Internet is a very popular means to get various businesses advertised; consequently, many Los Angeles private investigators turned to creating personal web pages in order to be more easily found by potential clients. A simple search on the Internet will show you that there are hundreds of private investigators offering their services in the city of Los Angeles. The first difficulty one may come across is the choice problem. How do I choose the right Los Angeles private investigator? How can I be sure that my problem is well being taken care of? Well, one step towards choosing a Los Angeles private investigator is by entering the site that you find most interesting. My advice is that you look for those web pages that have an interactive option, a forum of some kind where you can ask some questions and make an idea of who uses the specific services. You can even inquire on the different ways your situation could be dealt with. One other important section concerns the company’s policy, their terms and conditions. Read those carefully and than you can go on. Many people who suspect their spouse of infidelity often turn to independent private eyes or investigation agencies to find out the truth and move on with their lives one way or the other. If you live in LA and face such a stressful situation you may turn to ASG, Los Angeles private investigators company, which deals with such issues on a daily basis. One big advantage is that every client finds comfort in knowing that his or her case is in good hands. Moreover, these Los Angeles private investigators may extent inquiries beyond the state of California to whatever part of USA may be needed under such circumstances. There are a large number of Los Angeles private investigators and agencies that deal with financial expertise, and they usually target large companies that need detailed background inquires before taking some important business move. You won’t feel sorry if you pay a little extra cash to have a Los Angeles private investigator with an accountant expert certification, take care of your finance problems. It may occur sometimes that the information gathered by the financial investigator may be needed in committee boards analysis. In such cases, make sure you don’t break any confidentiality agreement. It’s better to keep an eye open, than regret it later! Learn more about tips on being a private investigator by visiting our free site. The History of Soap Making

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Gary Everson Records indicate that soap making began as far back as 2,800 B.C. Inscriptions discovered on the sides of clay cylinders excavated from the ruins of ancient Babylon describe the boiling of fats with ashes. Unfortunately the inscriptions do not describe the use of the mixture. Ancient Egyptians are known to have bathed regularly, a medical Papyrus from about 1,500 B.C. describes the mixture of oils with alkaline salts to form a soap-like mixture used both for washing and treating skin conditions. According to an ancient Roman legend, soap got its name from Mount Sapo, where the practice of animal sacrifice was carried out. It is said that the rain then washed the mixture of animal fat and ashes down through the clay soil into river Tiber, where women found that the mixture made their washing cleaner and did so with much less effort. Today the chemical reaction resulting from the combination of fats or oils with an alkaline is still called saponification. By the seventh century soap making had become an established craft in Europe. Trade secrets were closely guarded by soap maker guilds which developed during the period. Vegetable and animal oils were used with ashes of plants, and fragrances were added. Gradually more varieties of soap became available for bathing, laundering, shaving and shampooing. Gary Everson is the Soap Business Guru. In his new e-book: Soap Making for Profit he describes in clear, step by step terms how to turn an enjoyable and creative hobby into a profitable business. Hypnotherapy and How it Can Help

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Aisha Erol Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis to unlock the capacity of the unconscious mind to bring about therapeutic changes by modifying deeply-held assumptions, fears and misconceptions. The issues that prompt people to turn to hypnotherapy for assistance include: Phobias Pain management Panic attacks Performance enhancement Habits e.g. smoking Obsessive Compulsive Disorders Stress management Performance anxiety Insomnia Confidence, self-esteem and assertiveness What Hypnosis Is Hypnosis is a natural state of mind, enhanced by deep mental and physical relaxation. Without knowing it everyone drifts into and out of mild hypnotic states daily. These periods of time are commonly referred to as day-dreams or running on autopilot. Hypnosis has nothing to do with being asleep or unconscious in any way. You are able to hear and remember everything, and will know exactly whats going on. People often worry that, under hypnosis, they can be made to do things they would not ordinarily agree to. This is incorrect: you remain in control all the time and cannot be made to do things that you genuinely object to. Participants in entertainment and stage hypnosis shows are fully aware that they will be asked to act in silly ways, and they implicitly agree to this at some level of their mind. Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy is simply the process of using hypnosis to unlock or access the unconscious mind, and to bring about therapeutic changes by modifying deeply-held assumptions, fears and misconceptions within it. There are two forms of hypnotherapy: Suggestion Hypnotherapy or Clinical Hypnotherapy The hypnotherapist guides the client into a relaxed state and enlists the power of the clients own imagination using a wide range of techniques from story-telling, metaphor or symbolism to the use of direct suggestions for beneficial change. Analytical Hypnotherapy or Hypnoanalysis This therapy is rather more intense and requires several sessions. It involves an in-depth analysis of the individuals inner fears, blocked and unresolved feelings and repressed memories and is carried out in a quiet and gentle way allowing the memories and emotion to flow and release anger, fear and hurt of the past. Are We Verbally Abusing God?

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Rosemary Horner Exodus 20:1-7 I read an excellent devotional based on this text. The famous verse Exodus 20:7 says; you shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. (New International Version) Then it hit me. This is a form of verbal abuse! Except it hurts God. And it hurts anyone who is connected with the Spirit of God. How often have you heard people say, Oh my God! or when stressed say Jesus? Now I dont need to mention the profanity that includes the name of God. God is hurt because His name should be used in prayer and praise with reverence. We are hurt because we know that and feel stabbed every time someone abuses the name. Yet, there are times when not using His name can be abusive. When we are attempting to be politically correct we leave out the O when writing the word God in correspondence. Also, if we say the name of Jesus, people who do not like the name are hurt. Thats right you can be accused of being verbally abusive to someone who does not share your love for the Lord. So what do we do? What have you done? I am convinced that more teaching should take place on social talk and the references to God. We live in a world that keeps changing but the word of God remains the same.We should also pray for the boldness to let someone know you do not appreciate how he or she use the name of someone you worship. It certainly isnt politically correct if they know your faith. How would they feel if you verbally abused their God?. Let us all make an effort to educate and also discipline ourselves not to be verbally abusive to God. All rights reserved, Rosemary Horner, 2007 Rosie is an inspirational speaker and author. Organic Gardening and Organic Fertilizers are Safe if Used Correctly

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Laura Fox With the recent scare to the nations spinach crop one must take the proper precautions to avoid infection from E. coli when using manure as a fertilizer. There is no reason to sacrifice the health benefits of organic gardening if one adheres to the correct procedures. Root crops and leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce are most susceptible to E. coli infection when manure is applied directly to the soil. Because of this, manure should never be applied directly to a garden. Only composted manure should be applied for organic gardening and farming benefits. While it may be easier to use un-composted manure, the extra effort to compost it outweighs the serious health risks associated with raw manure. If you choose to use manure in your compost you must ensure you do it correctly or you will run the risk of infection. The compost must be mixed regularly to be sure there is proper aeration to the pile and so that the entire heap has reached the required temperature. The temperature must reach at least 140 F during two five day heating cycles. A thermometer must be used to properly measure the temperature, do not estimate. The compost must be mixed between cycles. The compost should be allowed to sit for a few months before it is applied to your garden. Waiting this extra period of time will allow the beneficial bacteria to effectively kill any harmful bacterial. Never use dog, pig, or cat manure as they may have parasites that can remain infectious to people. Because commercially processed manure reaches much higher composting temperatures than homemade compost, it is considerably safer to use. Therefore it should be considered a best practice to make your home composts without manure. If you feel the need to add manure to your garden, commercially processed manure is the safest bet. When you are adding composted manure to the garden, it is best to mix it into the soil before you plant and not leave it on the surface. This way the manure will not have direct contact with the plants leaves. It is recommended that you apply composted manure at least 120 days before any crop harvest. While manure certainly can help your garden grow, the proper precautions must always be adhered to. After all manure is animal waste, so caution is needed.
