So Winter’s Coming, Help Me!

By Philip Ashforth The summer has again raced past us and we are heading inexorably towards the winter months, all ten of them! So what strategies can we employ to get through the winter relatively unscathed until nex year’s summer? Phil Ashforth, life coach and director of synergycoaching.co.uk discusses Winter anxieties and what we can do to make the very most of our lives at this time, who knows, you might even start looking forward to your winter with enthusiasm. Its only natural at this time of year to start thinking with a sense of impending doom that there are so few days left to go before Christmas, when the financial hangover from last year still hasnt receded, and the prospect of nights drawing in at around two in the afternoon seems almost too much to bear. But before you pack the suitcase and abscond for good to an all year climate, what is it about the winter that fills so many of us with dread? Are there decisions we could make, and strategies we could initiate that could actually motivate us to change our attitude towards the darker months? Darker nights are actually a great opportunity for developing new areas of interest, learning new skills, and getting involved in something outside of your normal routine. Its ultimately about making some good decisions, a little planning and foresight and the key point, taking some new actions. Its very easy in the winter months to start becoming passive about life, television is a magnet for many families, its widely acknowledged by experts, as a nation, were getting far too much of it. One strategy you could employ is to start planning your viewing around programmes you enjoy in advance, then simply switching off between programmes. This frees up lots of time to engage in other activities that actually involve you in taking part, rather than watching hours of telly, youre not really that bothered about. When was the last time you set any real goals for yourself? Now is a good opportunity to start. Get yourself a quiet space and get thinking, what do you want to be, do and have over the next few months? There are no rules, just let your imagination rule for a while. Now you have a list, get your top ten, the ones you can associate with a big WHY, stick these on the bathroom mirror on a stick-it pad, seeing these goals every day when you wash or shave will give you a constant reminder, when you get sick enough of seeing them, youll start taking the necessary actions, even if its just to get rid of them from your mirror as you achieve them. Your self-esteem will also soar as you get into the habit of planning and achieving your goals. Christmas is a huge topic, but briefly, start thinking about what you are going to do and take action early. The reason so many people find Christmas a stress area is because they end up reacting to it far too late, when it is much easier to plan arrangements and budget spending in advance, and try to stick with your decisions. For the worst two months in many peoples calendar, January and February, start planning some key events into these months now, could you break up this period with a Weekend break, or organise a social event? It doesnt have to be expensive, just getting together with friends or family members, or simple outings. Now is also the time to plan on how healthy you want to be. Decide the level of exercise you need and as Nike say, just do it. Knowing that you are out there exercising or keeping fit, is a great boost to your self esteem and gives you the energy and resilience to face the barrage of colds and minor infections that develop in the winter. So there you go, a few ideas for winter survival, most of all its about, remembering the sun is still out there just above those clouds, value the fact you are living and able to experience all the good and bad of our climate, and come out in full force for another brilliant summer next year, having reached many of your goals.
